Description
Being offered is an antique cast iron "The Swift Mill" # 12 by Lane Brothers in Poughkeepsie, NY, dated Feb 8, 1875 at the patent date. The condition is used but excellent for its age with much of the original black & white paint still present. There is also a faint black Star of David painted on the lid (see photos.) Wheel turns and the coarseness knob opposite the wheel works to adjust the inner grinding mechanism which adjusts the fineness of the grinds. Original catch pan is included.
This was likely an in-home marketed grinder with only one wheel. If it had two wheels the grinding mechanism would have been difficult to adjust and cleaning or clearing any obstructions would have been impossible without removing the wheel on the back side. The single wheel claim is supported by the fact that the paint on the backside cover is worn-off on top. Persons would rest their hand in this location while turning the wheel (see photos.) If there were a second wheel present this wear would not be possible.
This piece has been in my family for over 100 years and belonged to my mother's aunt who lived in the Narrowsburg, NY area in the late 19th and early 20th century. It has been in my mother's possession since the 1950's and I remember it in her kitchen for the last 55 years. Sadly this is now over and the item needs a new home as I have no space for it.
