    Description

This is one outstanding piece of history with a lot of character! This started out life as a bowie-style knife made by the Bridgeport Gun Implement Company (Bridgeport G.I. Co) C.1870-1908. Early in World War II combat knives were in short supply for American soldiers going off to war, so many older existing knives were converted for combat use. Such was the case with this incredible knife. The original grips were knocked off, and a rather crude aluminum handle was installed. To this, likely done by the medic himself, a variation of the medical caduceus was carved unto the soft aluminum, but instead of using the traditional staff and serpent, he used an arrow symbolizing war to which the serpent is coiled around. He also has his initials crudely carved near the brass guard. The reverse has "DOC" carved into the handle, along with an indentation that serves as a thumb grip. As you can see, the knife comes with its original leather scabbard, which is in pretty rough shape. Cowhide lace has been wrapped around the scabbard. Since there is no belt loop as a means of suspension, I believe the lace served this purpose. Just a great knife, and once sold you'll likely not find another one like this.
    Overall length - 11 3/4"
    Blade length - 7 1/4"
Blade width - Bit under an inch
The knife remains in good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. There is plenty of dark patina on the blade, as well as light oxidation. The blade remains sharp from long ago, with a few small nicks along the cutting edge from period use. The scabbard remains very fragile, with the most noticeable area of damage being the tip which has a clear break and in threatening to completely sever. Overall, the scabbard shows plenty of wear and age. Please see the pictures for more detail.
